Mercedes has announced the commencement of production of the new generation of their entry-level sedan, the C Class. The new C Class, codenamed the W206 will be produced at Mercedes’ Chakan facility in Maharashtra. Mercedes has also revealed that at launch, it will be available in 3 variants- C200, C200d and C300d. The new W206 C Class gets an entirely new redesigned exterior. The design language is now in line with Merc’s latest products and the styling has a more matured look against the outgoing car’s curvy proportions. The elements also wear a far more restrained proportions. Coming to the rear end, the car now wears flatter, triangular shaped taillights like the new W223 S Class which have a good amount of detailing. The focus on elegance is also easy to spot with soft lines and a minimalistic design which is a classic Mercedes-Benz design trait. The front end now has sharper headlamps and a bonnet with strong character lines along with new, more sportier bumpers.
Mercedes will offer the new C Class initially with 1 petrol engine and 2 diesel engine options. Internationally, the C200 gets a 1.5L 4 cylinder engine producing 204HP while the Diesel is a 2.0L 4 cylinder+48V mild hybrid powertrain producing a combines 181HP in the 200d while the range-topping 300d will get the same engine but producing 281HP. Mercedes says the W206 C300d does the 0-100 kmph run in a mere 5.7s going all the way till 250 kmph before it tops off. Whether these powertrains will make it to India remains to be seen.
Additionally, we expect Mercedes to introduce the performance-oriented versions- the C43 AMG and C63 AMG in the future in-line with the current generation lineup
The new W206 C Class gets all-new interiors that make it feel far more modern than the current generation car. The focus with design has definitely shifted towards incorporating more tech features. The centre-piece of the dashboard is a massive 11.9 inch touchscreen that is responsible to control most of the interior functions and to play tunes as well. Sitting right above the “floating” screen are 3 very shapely AC vents that have a very classy brushed aluminium texture to them. That’s not all though, it gets a new updated steering wheel and the analogue dials in the instrument cluster are now replaced with single, highly configurable screen.
