New Land Rover Defender 130 to launch this month

Jaguar Land Rover has announced that it is expanding its 4×4 family portfolio with an upcoming launch of the new 8-seat Defender 130.

Stated to break cover on 31st May, the new Defender 130 will join the ranks of 90 and 110 with the uber-practical body design, where Land Rover claim making all-terrain adventures for up to eight possible.

The new Defender 130 will be available with a 2-3-3 split interior seating arrangement, making room for an additional person’s seating over the 110 model. Combining that with cutting edge tech, Land Rover claims 130 to be the “toughest, most capable off road expert”.

More about the Land Rover Defender

Land Rover launched the cult-favourite Defender in 2020 as the first generational upgrade since 1983. Currently, the car is sold in two versions, the 90 and 110; latter being the 3-row 7-seater option among the two. JLR launched the Defender in India in 2020, with a mild facelift in 2021.

Engine options for the existing Defender models include a 2.0-litre four-cylinder ‘Ingenium’ turbo-petrol engine putting out 300hp and 400Nm of torque, and an inline-6 cylinder mild hybrid engine with 400hp and 550Nm. Among other petrol options, a plug-in hybrid system (for the 110) eking out 400hp and 640Nm in conjunction to the electric motor also is available. Higher up, customers can also get a V8 fire breather with 520hp and 525Nm of torque.

Diesel options include only an inline-6 cylinder mild hybrid powerplant churning out 300hp and 600Nm. All models come with an 8-speed automatic transmission as standard.

The Defender gets a permanent four-wheel drive system with centre and rear locking differentials. The luxury off-roader also gets Land Rover’s Terrain Response System, which employs electronic aids based on whatever situation the car gets thrown at it.

Price of the Defender:

The Defender 90 starts at INR 80.72Lakhs (ex-showroom) for the base variant and INR 82.25Lakhs (ex-showroom) for the 110. Expect the upcoming Defender 130 to come at a slight premium of INR 2-3Lakhs.

Clear rivals to the Defender are non-existent with Jeep Wrangler coming close as a similar class 4×4.
