The news is finally out of the oven, fresh baked. Oscar Piastri is set to join McLaren for the 2023 season after the FIA Contract Recognition Board ruled in favour of the British team in their fight with Alpine over the Australian driver’s contract.
This time with confirmation from both sides, Piastri is set to be Lando Norris’ teammate from 2023 on a “multi-year contract”. After Fernando Alonso’s shock switch to Aston Martin during the initial summer break week, the French outfit was quick to announce their reserve driver Piastri as Alonso’s replacement. Things went awry as the latter took to twitter to claim otherwise, as there was no such contract in place, even going as much as to say “I will not be driving for Alpine in 2023”.
We have signed 2021 F2 champion @OscarPiastri.
Oscar joins Lando to form our exciting F1 driver line-up from 2023. 👊

Come this Friday, the CRB ruled in favour of McLaren and gave them rights to Piastri’s contract, while listing out Alpine’s financial hole for all this drama (which, by the way, is NOT cheap). This finally puts to rest the conspiracies surrounding Alpine and McLaren, coincidentally the teams fighting for P4 in the constructors this year.
Oscar Piastri is widely considered to be the next of up and coming mega-talents of F1. He won the Formula Renault Eurocup, F3 world championship and the 2021 F2 Championship in his successive rookie years, a feat accomplished by none other. So it goes without saying why teams like McLaren and Alpine are fighting to put this man in their cars.
Alpine thus have managed to pull off a master class of losing two of the best drivers on the grid in a matter of months. McLaren on the other hand, now have the dynamic pairing with the young guns of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. Now, all they need to do is make a car that is *actually* championship worthy, that’s all.
