BMW India has launched the latest generation of their performance sedan, the M5. Codenamed the G90, it is priced at Rs. 1.99 Crore (Ex-showroom) and for the first time gets a strong hybrid powertrain.

BMW M5: Design & Interiors 

As with previous M5s, the new version also gets sportier styling compared to the regular 5 series sedan. At the front, the grille gets the gloss black treatment and a more aggressive bumper with a wider air dam. Towards the side, the new M5 gets 20-inch front and 21-inch rear alloy wheels. Then there is also the chunkier and sportier side sills and the flared wheel arches. At the rear, it gets a new spoiler as well as a very aggressive bumper with black chrome quad exhausts and a diffuser as well. There are also vertical cuts on either sides housing the reflector.

For India, BMW is also offering the M Carbon package as standard which adds carbon fibre mirror caps, rear spoiler and carbon roof which saves about 30KGs of weight. Alternatively, buyers can also spec it with a panoramic sunroof.

Inside, there is a new leather steering wheel with a flat bottom and red marker at the top. It also gets BMW’s ‘Curved Display’ which houses the digital gauge cluster as well as the touchscreen infotainment system which now runs on iDrive 8.5. There is also new ambient lighting, new gear shift knob and M Multifunction seats with an illuminated M5 logo. Music is put out through an 18-speaker Bowers and Wilkins sound system which also gets a 655W amplifier.

BMW M5: Performance

Under the hood is where the new M5 has gained much more power. For the first time ever, the M5 gets powered by a strong hybrid powertrain making use of a 4.4L twin-turbo V8 paired to an 8 speed torque converter and an electric drive unit with an 18.6kWh battery pack. The engine alone makes 585HP and 750NM of torque while the electric motor adds another 197HP and 280NM. Combined, it puts out an astonishing 727HP and 1000NM of torque. According to BMW, the battery offers the M5 an all-electric range of 69Kms (WLTP).

Driving the wheels is an M xDrive all-wheel-drive system which gets rear biased in the Sport mode while also offering drivers the option to exclusively drive the rear wheels. The M5 is also equipped with an adaptive M suspension with electronic dampers as well as rear axle steering which steers the rear wheels by upto 1.5 degrees to aid in handling.

Courtesy to all this gadgetry, the M5 sprints from 0-100Kmph in just 3.5 seconds. Top speed for the G90 M5 is 250Kmph which can be further raised to 305Kmph with an optional M Driver’s Package. BMW also says that it will reach a top speed of 140Kmph in an all-electric mode. Further, optioning the M Professional package, the left paddleshift also gets a ‘Boost’ feature which adds short bursts of power when activated via the electric drive unit. An optional M Drive Professional package also unlocks ‘TRACK’ mode along with a lap timer and a Boost Control function.

BMW M5: Price, Rivals

For India, BMW has priced the M5 at Rs. 1.99 Crores (Ex-showroom) without options. Imported as a CBU (Completely Built-up Unit), it gets ten standard exterior colour options- Alpine White, Black Sapphire, Sophisto Grey, Brooklyn Grey, Fire Red, Carbon Black, Isle of Man Green, Storm Bay, Marina Bay Blue, Frozen Deep Grey. Further the full leather Merino upholstery inside can be had in Red-Black, Kyalami Orange, Silverstone-Black and Black colour themes. Customers will also be able to customise other paint finishes as an option. BMW will also offer a host of accessories such as carbon fibre rear diffuser, side skirts, side decals, tail pipe finisher and more.

In terms of rivals, the M5 will compete with other performance sedans such as the Mercedes-Benz AMG C63 S E Performance and Porsche Panamera among others.

BMW India has launched an updated version of their sports sedan- the M340i at a price of Rs. 74.9 Lakhs (Ex-showroom). Largely a cosmetic update, it now also gets two new paint options to widen the appeal.

2024 BMW M340i: what’s changed

For the exterior changes, the M340i is now available with Arctic Race Blue and Fire Red paint options in addition to the existing Dravit Grey, Tanzanite Blue and Black Sapphire colour schemes.

Inside is where most of the changes lie. The updates include a slightly revised dashboard with new AC vents. There is also new black ‘Vernasca’ leather seats with blue stitching. The 2024 model also now gets a ‘Widescreen Curved Display’ comprising of a 12.3 inch digital instrument cluster and a new 14.9 inch infotainment touchscreen which now runs on iDrive 8.5 operating system.

Under the hood, the adaptive suspension is now standard which was an optional extra previously. Besides this, there are no changes and it remains powered by a 3.0L six-cylinder twin-turbo petrol with 48V mild-hybrid technology. It gets mated to an 8 speed torque converter automatic transmission making 374HP and 500NM of torque. This powertrain drives the wheels via an xDrive all-wheel-drive system. BMW claims a 0-100Kmph time of 4.4 seconds which makes it the fastest ICE car on sale to be locally-assembled in India.

As before, the M340i gets a slew of optional equipment which can be customised by buyers. It is only available in a single variant and gets priced at Rs. 74.90 Lakhs (Ex-showroom). It continues to be brought in as a CKD and is assembled at BMW’s facility in Chennai. It competes with other sporty variants of luxury sedans such as the Mercedes-Benz C43 AMG and the Audi S5 amongst other rivals.

BMW has launched the i5 electric sedan at a price of Rs. 1.20 Crore (Ex-showroom). The latest electric offering from BMW will be available only in a single high-performance M60 xDrive variant at launch and will be brought in as a CBU. Based on the latest G60 generation of the 5 series globally, its ICE powered versions are expected to launch later this year with an extended wheelbase.

BMW i5 M60: Design, Interior & Features

Talking of the styling, the i5 follows BMWs latest design philosophy with swept back sharp headlamps at the front along with a generous use of gloss black on the grille and bumper. Towards the side you have a classic long bonnet and a steeply raked windshield which is a design hallmark of the 5 series. At the rear, it gets a pair of horizontal taillamps with LED lighting along with vertical reflectors and a gloss black diffuser on the rear bumper.

Inside, the dashboard is dominated by twin curved screens acting as the instrument cluster as well the infotainment system which run BMWs latest 8.5 OS. There are also Sports seats with electric adjust and ventilation as standard while customers can opt for Comfort seats as well. You also have what BMW calls a ‘Panorama Skyroof’ which extends from the tip of the windshield all the way till the end of the roof. Other equipment includes an 18-speaker 655W Bowers & Wilkins surround sound system, M Leather steering wheel, carbon fibre trim, Adaptive LED headlights with high beam assist and ADAS Level 2 features among other equipment.

BMW i5 M60: Performance, Price

Underneath, the i5 M60 gets powered by a dual-motor setup making 601HP and 795NM of torque. This enables it to achieve a 0-100Kmph time of 3.8 seconds before hitting a top speed of 230Kmph. Mounted on the front and rear axles, the motors also give it xDrive all-wheel-drive capability. Behind this is an 81.20kWh battery pack giving it a claimed WLTP range of 516Km. BMW will provide an 11kW home charger as complimentary while customers can also buy a 22kW AC fast charger as an option. The i5 also gets active rear wheel steering for better agility along with an Adaptive M suspension with electronically adjustable dampers with the stiffer M suspension with active roll stabilisation also available as an option.

The i5 M60 xDrive is available in a single variant priced at Rs. 1.20 Crore (Ex-showroom) and will be imported as a CBU (Completely Built-up Unit). The car comes with a 2 year/unlimited Km warranty as standard with the battery having a warranty of 8 years/ 1,60,000Kms. Bookings have been opened since earlier this month with deliveries expected to commence soon. The i5 M60 will compete with other luxury EV sedans such as the Audi e-tron GT and Porsche Taycan.

The all-electric BMW iX1 can be yours for Rs. 66.90 Lakhs (Ex-showroom). It also becomes the third all-electric BMW to be sold in India and will also be the brand’s entry level EV. It joins the i4, iX and i7 in BMW’s EV lineup.

BMW iX1 Exterior & Interior; what’s changed

On the outside, the iX1 is almost identical to the regular X1 and most people would not notice the changes. At the front, there is an “i” badge denoting the electric drivetrain on the grille. The iX1 also gets Adaptive LED headlamps unlike its ICE-siblings. Another change is all BMW logos on the car get a blue ring to denote the same. It also gets 18 inch alloy wheels on the outside. Four colours are available-  Space Silver, Black Sapphire and Storm Bay and Alpine White.

Inside as well, not much has changed and it continues to feature a curved 10.7 inch iDrive 7 infotainment system along with a 10.25 inch digital cockpit. There are also features such as massaging front seats, a 12 speaker Harman Kardon music system, ambient lighting, panoramic sunroof, reclining rear seats, dual-zone climate and more. Boot space is rated at 490 litres.

BMW iX1 Powertrain

Under the hood, the iX1 gets powered by a dual-motor setup with one on each axle paired to a 66.4kWh lithium-ion battery pack. This combination produces 313HP and 494NM of torque while the range is a WLTP-claimed 440Kms. The iX1 can do 0-100Kmph in 5.6 s before hitting a top speed of 180Kmph. Being a dual motor setup, it also gets xDrive all-wheel-drive system with electronically controlled ‘Automatic Differential Brakes/Locks’ (ADB-X) system.

Exclusive to the iX1 is also an Adaptive M suspension. BMW says the iX1 has a 130kW DC fast charging capability which tops up the battery from 10-80% within just 29 minutes. BMW will also provide an 11kW AC wallbox charger which charges the car from 0-100% within 6.3 hours along with the car as standard.

Safety includes ADAS Level 2 features such as Lane Departure Warning, Adaptive Cruise Control, Auto Emergency Braking and Pedestrian Protection which are also exclusive to it. Other safety features include 6 airbags, Traction Control, Corner Braking Control, Hill Start Assist, ESC, Hill Descent control and EPB with auto hold among else.

BMW iX1 Price & Rivals

BMW has launched the iX1 in a single xDrive 30 M Sport trim at a price of Rs. 66.90 Lakhs (Ex-showroom). This puts it in the company of other electric crossovers such as the Volvo XC40 Recharge, Kia EV6 and the Hyundai Ioniq 5. It is being brought as a Completely Built-Up Unit (CBU) with local CKD assembly being on the cards at a later date if successful.

BMW has revealed the long-wheelbase version of the latest generation 5 series sedan(codenamed G60) for China. It is expected to be launched in India next year between a price of Rs. 70-90 Lakhs(Ex-showroom). The long wheelbase frees up more legroom in the second row and is aimed towards buyers who are chauffeured.

BMW 5 series LWB Exterior changes

Like the regular european-spec short-wheelbase 5 series, the LWB is largely similar. This includes a more straighter design with less curves than the current car. Unlike other recent BMWs, it does not get an oversized grille or split taillamps however. Towards the side is where most changes have occurred. The stretched wheelbase has resulted in a larger rear door along with a flatter roofline to free up headroom. There is an illuminated “5” motif on the C pillar which is a China-exclusive touch. There aren’t many changes towards the rear, although boot space could be increased due to the larger dimensions.

BMW 5 Series LWB Interior

The interiors also remain largely identical to the short-wheelbase variant and feature a massive BMW Curved Display encasing two screens acting as the infotainment system and a digital instrument cluster. China-specific touches include a Titanium Bronze inlay for the passenger side instrument panel and Clarity Glass applications for various controls.

Towards the rear is where the biggest changes are present. There is now a lot more legroom owing to the longer dimensions. Also exclusive to the LWB is a massive 31.3 inch entertainment screen with 8K resolution that folds down from the roof. There is also a 4-zone climate control, embossed “5” motif on headrests, a Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System and quilted two-tone leather seats for the rear occupants.

BMW 5 Series LWB India launch, Price, Rivals

BMW is expected to launch the G60 5 series LWB sometime next year. It could be priced anywhere between Rs. 70-90 Lakhs (Ex-showroom). Expect a large hike over the current car owing to the dimensions and increase in equipment. It is also expected that the regular short-wheelbase 5 series would be discontinued just like the 3 series short-wheelbase was earlier this year. The 5 LWB will go up against the very popular Mercedes-Benz E-Class LWB which is also due for a new generation in India next year. A higher-performance M version could also come in at a later date.

We can also expect the all-electric i5 version to launch late next year which could be priced around Rs.1-1.2 Cr. However, this will be the short-wheelbase version and will go up against the upcoming Mercedes-Benz EQE sedan.

BMW has launched the facelifted version of their full-size luxury SUV, the X5. Priced from Rs. 93.90 Lakhs (Ex-showroom), it gets new features and a sharper front fascia with a nip and tuck elsewhere. Available in two trims and engine options, it also gets a 48V mild-hybrid system as standard.

BMW X5 Facelift Design

Starting off with the front end, the X5 facelift now feature updated slimmer Adaptive LED headlamps, a new grille with an optional illuminated function (on the X5 40i Petrol) and a new sleeker bumper with vertical air vents on either ends. Moving towards the side profile, the X5 now features 21 inch alloys as standard along with roof rails finished in silver or black depending on the variant.

Towards the rear, the changes have been largely restricted to the redesigned taillamps and a new faux skidplate.

BMW X5 Facelift Interiors & Features

Inside, the X5 facelift receives a major revamp. There is a new dashboard and a new steering wheel. However, the main highlight is the BMW Curved Display which houses the 12.3 inch digital cluster as well as the 14.9 inch touchscreen infotainment system in itself. Another change is the 4 zone climate control and new ambient light bar in the passenger footwell.

Other features include Navigation with real-time traffic information and augmented view, Heads-up Display and connected drive features include BMW ID, BMW App, Digital Key Plus, Emergency Call, Real-time Traffic Information, Remote Services and smartphone parking among others. It also gets Cruise Control, the Attentiveness Assistant, Parking Assistant Professional with Surround View Camera, Drive Recorder, remote parking via smartphone and Reversing Assistant as standard. Further, the xLine trims get sports seats as standard with the M Sport getting Comfort seats with ventilation and electric adjust for driver and co-driver seats.

BMW X5 Facelift Powertrain

As mentioned before, the new X5 gets a choice of Petrol and Diesel powertrains which also receive 48V mild-hybrid assist as standard. The 3.0L turbocharged 6 cylinder petrol in the 40i trims produces 381HP and 520NM of torque. This unit paired to an 8 speed torque converter gearbox sends the X5 from 0-100 in just 5.4 seconds.

The Diesel variants also receive a 3.0L 6 cylinder motor which makes 286HP and 650NM of torque. The same 8 speed torque converter also does duty here to send the diesel X5 from 0-100 in 6.1 seconds. BMW claims the 48V mild-hybrid system adds an additional 12HP and 200NM torque when needed. Four driving modes are offered- Comfort, Efficient, Sport and Sport Plus. BMW is also offering their xDrive all-wheel-drive system as standard on the new X5 along with a self-levelling air suspension.

In terms of safety features, the X5 gets Dynamic Traction Control, Hill Start Assist, Hill Descent Assist, 6 airbags, Cornering Braking Control, EPB with auto-hold and more.

BMW X5 Facelift Price & Variants

BMW has launched the X5 facelift in 4 variants with 2 each in Petrol and Diesel fuel options ranging from a price of Rs. 93.90 Lakhs to Rs. 1.07 Cr. The detailed pricelist is given below.

Exterior colour options for the X5 include Brooklyn Grey, Carbon Black, Mineral White, Skyscraper Grey, Tanzanite Blue and Black Sapphire. The interiors come standard with Sensafin upholstery in Cognac shade on the xLine trims while the M Sport gets “Merino” leather interiors in three themes- Tartufo, Black and Black & Ivory White.

The new X5 will rival other luxury SUVs such as the Mercedes-Benz GLE, Range Rover Velar, Audi Q7 and more.

BMW has launched a facelift of the Z4 two-seater convertible. It has received numerous cosmetic updates along with additional equipment. It is available in only a single M40i trim and will be brought in as a CBU(Completely Built-up Unit).

BMW Z4 facelift Exteriors

On the outside, changes though present, are subtle. At the front, the Z4 gets a new bumper with triangular air intakes along with slightly tweaked headlamps. Also new is the kidney grille which now gets a gloss-black finish and a honeycomb pattern against the silver lined grille with slats in the pre-facelift car. At the side, the only change seems to be a new design for the 19 inch alloys.

Moving towards the rear, however, there are no changes and it continues to feature L-shaped taillamps, vertical reflectors and twin square-shaped exhaust tips. BMW is offering three new colour shades this time around- Thundernight, Skyscraper Grey and Portimao Blue which join the Black Sapphire, San Francisco Red and the optional Frozen Grey II from the previous version.

BMW Z4 facelift Interior & Features

Climb inside the Z4 and you will notice that not much has changed. The dashboard design remains the same, however it now receives the latest iDrive 7.0 software for the 10.25 inch touchscreen. BMW has also offered a new combination of the upholstery which is now finished in Leather and Alcantara with contrast Blue stitching and piping on the seats. The interiors further get an option of three colours- Black, Magma Red and Cognac Vernasca Leather.

Other equipment remains the same including the digital driver display, 2-zone climate control, ambient lighting, Wireless Apple Carplay, Driving modes, 4 airbags, Brake assist, DSC and more.

BMW will also provide optional extras such as a 408W 12 speaker Harman Kardon music system, a full-colour Heads-up Display, Active Cruise Control, Parking Assistant, Wireless Charger, Adaptive Headlamps and more

BMW Z4 Powertrain & Price

The new Z4 remains unchanged under the hood, getting powered by a 3.0L six-cylinder twin turbo petrol. This produces 340HP and 500NM. Transmission duties are handled by an 8 speed Steptronic transmission which sends power to the rear wheels. 0-100Kmph is achieved in 4.5 seconds.

BMW has priced the Z4 M40i at Rs. 89.30 Lakhs(Ex-showroom) with optional features costing extra. It will rival the Porsche 718 Boxster.

BMW has launched the X3 M40i at a price of Rs. 86.50 Lakhs (Ex-showroom). It can be only be booked online through BMW’s website store and will be available in limited numbers

BMW X3 M40i Exterior & Interior

BMW has made several changes to the exterior of the M40i. These include addition of sportier bits such as a gloss black kidney grille with M logo, black chrome exhaust pipes, tinted headlights, gloss black roof rails and more.

Also standard are 20-inch M light alloy wheels with a staggered setup. The front tyres sport 245 section tyres while the rear gets 275 section tyres as standard. BMW is also offering red brake calipers with the M Sport brakes.

Inside, it gets many features such as a 360 camera, dual-12.3 inch screens, a 16 speaker Harman Kardon music system, Heads-up display and more. The interiors are only available with an all-black theme with Sensatec perforated leather upholstery.

BMW X3 M40i Performance

The X3 M40i now receives the same powertrain as its sedan sibling, the M340i. This translates to a 3.0L turbocharged 6 cylinder engine mated to an 8 speed torque converter AT. This combo produces 360HP and 500NM of torque. Further, the car does the 0-100Kmph run in a quick 4.9 seconds making it the fastest SUV in its segment. BMW also offers an xDrive AWD system as standard with an electronic differential and an adaptive M Sport suspension.

BMW X3 M40i Price & Colours

The X3 M40i is priced at Rs. 86.50 Lakhs (Ex-showroom) and is available in 2 colours- Brooklyn Grey and Black Sapphire. Bookings are open and it is exclusively sold through BMW’s online store. There are no direct rivals to the X3 M40i although the regular X3 competes with cars such as the Mercedes GLC, Land Rover Discovery Sport, Jaguar F-Pace and Audi Q5.
