Especially when finished in black or silver.

The S-Class before the S-Class

The S-Class name may have arrived in 1972, but its story began much earlier. In 1951, Mercedes Benz introduced the W187, better known as the 220. It brought back the inline six engine after the war and used an overhead camshaft drawn from the brand’s racing experience. Power was modest, but it set the foundation for the refinement that would define generations to come.

By the mid 1950s came the Ponton cars, including the W180 and its siblings. These models marked a major shift to a unibody construction, moving away from the older body on frame setup. The 2.2 litre engine continued, gaining fuel injection by 1958 and becoming more advanced with time.

In 1959, the W111 and W112 arrived, known as the Fintail models. While the design stood out, the real focus was safety. These cars introduced crumple zones, along with features like padded steering wheels, disc brakes and air suspension. It was here that the blueprint of the S Class truly began to take shape.

1972–1980: W116 S-Class, The First Official S-Class

In 1972, Mercedes Benz introduced the W116, the first model to officially wear the S-Class badge. The name itself came from the German term Sonderklasse, which translates to special class, a fitting description for what this car represented.

The W116 brought independent suspension on all four wheels and disc brakes as standard, setting new benchmarks for ride and control. But the real story was safety. This generation introduced crumple zones, extensive interior padding, improved visibility systems, and better occupant protection overall. It was among the first cars to offer ABS, and an airbag system.

Under the hood, the range included inline six and V8 engines, with the 450 models leading the lineup. Despite the oil crisis, Mercedes pushed ahead with the iconic 450 SEL 6.9, a powerful flagship that combined performance with advanced suspension.

The W116 was also the first mass produced car to offer a turbo diesel, expanding its appeal globally. In 1974, the 450 SE was named European Car of the Year, reinforcing its impact.

More than just a luxury sedan, the W116 defined what the S Class would stand for. Technology, safety, and presence.

1979–1991: W126 S-Class, Sacco’s Legacy

Designed under the leadership of Mercedes Benz design head Bruno Sacco, the W126 arrived in 1979, replacing the W116 and taking the S Class formula to a whole new level. If the previous generation established safety, this one refined everything around it. The design was cleaner and more aerodynamic, while engineering improvements focused on efficiency and long distance comfort.

Inside, the W126 felt more advanced than ever. Features like improved climate control, heated seats, and better cabin lighting elevated the experience. But it was safety where it truly stood out. The W126 introduced a driver airbag in 1980, followed by a passenger airbag later in the decade, along with seat belt pretensioners and traction control. At the time, very few cars offered anything close.

Engine options ranged from inline six units to V8s, with the larger motors delivering the effortless performance expected of an S Class. The iconic SEC coupe also made a return, adding a more personal and stylish take on the flagship sedan.

A mid cycle update in the mid 1980s brought subtle design changes and improved engines, keeping the W126 fresh through its long production run.

By the time it went out of production in 1991, the W126 had firmly established itself as the definitive S Class. Refined, advanced, and built to lead.

1991–1998: W140 S-Class, Engineering at its Peak

In 1991, the W140 replaced the highly successful W126, marking one of the most ambitious chapters in S Class history. This was a car developed without compromise. It was larger, heavier, and significantly more complex, offered in two wheelbase options along with a dedicated coupe.

Everything about the W140 was over engineered. It introduced double glazed windows for improved insulation, soft closing doors and boot, and electric windows with jam protection. Even the heating system was designed to continue supplying warm air after the engine was switched off using residual heat. In the United States, it also featured retractable rear parking markers that extended when reversing to help judge the car’s size.

Under the skin, the W140 pushed boundaries further. Mercedes delayed its launch to develop a new V12 engine, responding to competition at the time. This resulted in a completely reworked engine bay and upgraded braking systems to handle the added performance.

Despite its engineering brilliance, the W140 faced challenges. Its high development costs made it significantly more expensive than its predecessor, and global economic conditions at the time affected demand. At the same time, new luxury rivals from Japan entered the market with aggressive pricing, shifting buyer expectations.

Even so, the W140 remains one of the most iconic S Class generations ever built. In markets like China and the Middle East, it earned nicknames that translate to power and presence, a reflection of the impact it left behind.

1998–2005: W220 S-Class, The Millennium Mercedes

In 1998, Mercedes Benz introduced the W220, taking the S Class in a completely different direction. Compared to the W140, this generation was smaller and lighter, yet more spacious inside, reflecting a clear shift towards efficiency and modern packaging.

The focus moved from sheer over engineering to intelligent technology. The W220 introduced air suspension under the Airmatic system, significantly improving ride comfort and adaptability. Inside, it brought a more digital experience with a central screen and the command interface, which controlled navigation and infotainment functions.

New features such as keyless entry and ignition, radar based cruise control under the Distronic system, and active cylinder control highlighted the increasing role of electronics in defining the luxury experience.

For India, the W220 holds particular importance. While earlier S Class models did make their way into the country through private imports, this was the first S Class to be officially launched by Mercedes Benz after entering the Indian market.

2005–2013: W221 S-Class, Technology Meets Presence

In 2005, Mercedes Benz unveiled the W221 S-Class. Compared to the W220, this generation brought back size, presence, and a stronger road identity, while continuing to push technology forward. The design was sharper and more defined, with wider arches and a more commanding stance. It was larger in every dimension and introduced a new range of engines that delivered noticeable gains in performance.

Inside, the W221 took a significant leap in perceived quality. Materials were upgraded across the board, with extensive use of leather, wood, and metal replacing the plastic heavy feel of its predecessor. The cabin also became more digital, featuring large display screens for the instrument cluster and the command system, bringing navigation, vehicle data, and entertainment into a more integrated interface.

Technology remained a key focus. Features like Night View Assist, which used infrared to improve visibility in low light conditions, and an advanced pre collision system showcased how the S Class continued to lead in safety and innovation. The shift to a column mounted gear selector also freed up space in the center console, improving usability.

In India, the W221 truly established the S-Class brand. It became the preferred choice for business leaders, Bollywood celebrities, and high-profile individuals. Its reputation was further cemented when an armoured version was used by the President of India, reinforcing its image as the benchmark luxury sedan in the country.

2013–2020: W222 S-Class, New Era of Luxury 

In 2013, Mercedes Benz introduced the W222 S-Class, a generation that focused on refinement, technology, and redefining modern luxury. It carried forward the presence of the W221 but elevated every aspect of comfort and sophistication.

The design followed a more fluid and elegant approach, aligning with the brand’s newer design language seen across its lineup. Inside, the cabin set new standards. Dual high resolution displays dominated the dashboard, blending the instrument cluster and infotainment system into a seamless digital interface, while materials and craftsmanship reached an entirely new level.

Ride comfort became a defining highlight. The updated Magic Body Control system used cameras to scan the road ahead and adjust the suspension in real time, significantly improving ride quality by preparing the car for bumps before it reached them.

This generation also marked the return of the Maybach name, now positioned as a sub brand within Mercedes Benz. The Mercedes Maybach S-Class extended the S-Class experience even further, offering significantly more space, enhanced rear seat comfort, and features aimed at chauffeur driven luxury.

From reclining rear seats to advanced ambient systems and high end audio, it redefined what the back seat experience could be. For India, the W222 had added significance. The Maybach version was locally assembled, India being the second country to produce a Maybach.

2020–Present: W223 S-Class, The Digital Flagship

In 2020, Mercedes Benz introduced the W223, taking the S-Class into a deeply digital era. This generation moved away from coupe and convertible derivatives, focusing entirely on the sedan as the core of the lineup.

The biggest transformation came inside. The cabin became screen led, with up to five displays, including a large central touchscreen and an augmented reality head up display. The system blended navigation with real world visuals, adding a new layer of interaction. For the first time, rear seat airbags were introduced, designed with a unique structure that deploys using ambient air to improve passenger safety.

Technology extended beyond comfort. Advanced driver assistance systems, improved connectivity, and continuous software integration became central to the S Class experience. Performance also evolved, with the introduction of high output hybrid systems, including the AMG S 63 E Performance, combining a V8 engine with electrification.

The W223 also retained the V12, now reserved for the ultra luxury Maybach variants, reinforcing its position at the very top of the range.

And just yesterday in India Mercedes Benz introduced the comprehensive mid cycle update for any S-Class. The changes were extensive, with a large number of components reworked. The exterior received a redesigned front with an illuminated grille and star themed lighting elements integrated into the headlamps and tail lamps.

Inside, the update focused on software and luxury. A new operating system powered by an advanced onboard computer improved responsiveness and enabled features like integrated streaming apps for rear passengers. The layout was refined to improve ergonomics, while rear seat occupants gained more control through dedicated interfaces.

Across generations, the S-Class has never stood still. From setting early benchmarks in safety and engineering to redefining luxury through technology and comfort, each iteration has reflected not just where the automotive world is, but where it is going. What began as Sonderklasse, meaning special class, continues to live up to its name, not by following trends, but by consistently setting them.

Both the Electric and JCW All4 are brought in as Completely Built Units. In contrast, the Countryman C will be assembled locally at BMW’s manufacturing facility, which is expected to influence both its pricing and overall market positioning. Recently, the BMW Group introduced the BMW M440i Convertible in India. The company is also preparing to bring the BMW X6 M60i to the market later this month.

Mini Countryman C – Expected Exterior Design

From a design perspective, the Mini Countryman C is expected to closely mirror the styling of the Countryman Electric, with subtle revisions to distinguish the petrol powered version. The front section is likely to feature a reworked grille design along with revised bumpers. Despite these updates, the SUV will retain its upright proportions and robust stance, which are key elements of the Countryman design.

Exterior details are expected to include body coloured door handles, while the outside rearview mirrors, pillars and roof are likely to be finished in black. Champagne coloured trim pieces will add contrast to the overall look. Alloy wheels and matrix LED tail lamps are also expected to contribute to the premium appearance of the model.

Mini has confirmed five colour options for the Indian market. These include Chilli Red, British Racing Green, Nanuq White, Slate Blue and Smokey Green.

Mini Countryman C – Interior Design and Features

On the inside, the Mini Countryman C is expected to follow the same modern cabin theme as the electric variant. A circular 9.4 inch OLED touchscreen is likely to take centre stage on the dashboard, complemented by a two spoke steering wheel. The interior layout is expected to focus on simplicity, with most functions integrated into digital controls.

The cabin may feature a dual tone finish along with the use of recycled materials across certain surfaces. This reflects Mini’s global direction towards sustainable interiors. The India spec model is expected to be offered in a single fully equipped variant, which could include dual zone climate control, a panoramic sunroof, a complete LED lighting setup, a head up display, paddle shifters and a premium sound system.

It must be noted that these features are based on the equipment seen in the Countryman Electric and JCW All4. The final feature list for the India bound Countryman C will be officially revealed at launch.

Mini Countryman C – Expected Powertrain

The Mini Countryman C is expected to be powered by a 1.5 litre turbo petrol direct injection engine paired with a 7 speed dual clutch gearbox. While Mini India has not yet released official figures, this engine is likely to be similar to the unit used in the BMW X1. In the X1, it produces 136 hp and 230 Nm of torque.

Mini Countryman C – Expected Market Positioning and Rivals

With local assembly, the Mini Countryman C is expected to be priced below the top specification JCW All4 variant, which is currently priced at Rs 64.9 lakh ex showroom. This could position it as a more attainable option within the Countryman lineup for buyers seeking a premium compact SUV.

In terms of competition, the Mini Countryman C will rival models such as the BMW X1, Audi Q3 and Mercedes Benz GLA in India. Backed by local assembly and a strong brand presence, the model is expected to appeal to customers who value distinctive styling along with everyday practicality.

Mercedes-Benz S-Class Facelift – Exterior Design

The exterior of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class has been updated with a stronger visual emphasis on lighting and front end presence. The most noticeable change is the revised radiator grille, which is now larger and incorporates illuminated elements for the first time on the S-Class. An illuminated Mercedes star on the bonnet is also available.

The headlamp design has been revised with new digital light units featuring a twin star DRL signature. Mercedes state that the updated lighting hardware increases illumination range and resolution, improving night time visibility while reducing glare for other road users. At the rear, the tail lamps feature a revised internal design with three star shaped elements.

New wheel designs and additional exterior colour options have been introduced, including matte and high gloss finishes. There is also a MANUFAKTUR variant on offer, which alters bumper designs and wheel choices without any mechanical changes.

Mercedes-Benz S-Class Facelift – Interior Design and Features

Inside, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class facelift introduces a revised digital and cabin layout that reflects the brand’s current focus on software led functionality and rear seat comfort. The updated model features the latest MBUX Superscreen layout, which integrates the central 14.1 inch infotainment display and a 12.3 inch front passenger screen beneath a single glass surface.

A fully digital 12.3 inch instrument cluster remains standard, with optional three dimensional display functionality depending on market and variant. Rear passengers are equipped with individual 13.1 inch screens paired with a dedicated tablet for control. Audio is handled by a 3D Burmester surround speaker system or an optional 4D Burmester surround sound system with integrated Dolby Atmos.

The latest Mercedes-Benz operating system forms the backbone of the infotainment and vehicle control architecture. The system supports voice based interaction, configurable menus and over the air software updates for selected functions. Rear seat focused features continue to be a priority, particularly in long wheelbase versions, with options such as individual rear seats, extended legroom, fold out tables and rear seat entertainment systems. There is also an option for integrated interior cameras that enable video conferencing functionality for rear passengers.

Mercedes-Benz S-Class Facelift – Powertrain

The S-Class facelift will be available only as a plug in hybrid petrol, with no confirmation yet on a diesel variant. The S 450 e is Mercedes-Benz’s first plug in hybrid in the flagship S-Class in India.

At the heart of the S 450 e is a 3.0 litre M256 Evo inline six turbo petrol engine, now Euro 7 compliant, producing 326 hp and 540 Nm. This is paired with a 120 kW electric motor positioned between the engine and the 9 speed automatic transmission. The combined system output stands at 435 hp and 680 Nm, making it more powerful than the earlier S 450 petrol variant.

The S 450 e features a 22 kWh lithium ion battery that provides a pure electric range of around 115 km as per WLTP. Performance figures include 0 to 100 km per hour in 5.7 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 250 km per hour. The model comes with AIRMATIC air suspension and rear axle steering as standard. Notably, the new S-Class is rear wheel drive, unlike its predecessor which featured all wheel drive.

Mercedes-Benz S-Class Facelift – Safety and Variants

Safety remains a key highlight of the S-Class facelift, with advanced protection systems for all occupants. The model continues Mercedes-Benz’s focus on safety through an enhanced adaptive restraint system, including PRE SAFE impulse belt pretensioners and up to 15 airbags, which is being introduced in India for the first time.

The S 450 e Launch Edition is priced at Rs. 2.20 crore, while the S 450 e MANUFAKTUR Edition starts from Rs. 2.38 crore, both ex showroom. Bookings are now open, with deliveries set to begin from Q4 2026.

Mercedes-Benz S-Class Facelift – Market Positioning and Rivals

The primary rival to the new S-Class facelift in India remains the BMW 7 Series. The 7 Series is currently offered with petrol, diesel and electric powertrains, whereas the S-Class is now limited to a plug in hybrid petrol option. The BMW 7 Series also received a global update earlier this year, and the facelifted version is expected to launch in India later this year.

For reference, Mercedes-Benz had initially introduced the pre facelift S-Class in India via the CBU route before later local assembly was commenced. Whether the brand will follow a similar strategy with the updated model remains to be seen. There is also no word from Mercedes-Benz on the introduction of a diesel or standard petrol variant at this stage.

New-Gen Hyundai i20 – Exterior Design

The biggest change to the new-gen Hyundai i20 is its exterior design. At the front, the hatchback gets dual pod LED headlamps linked by a light bar that runs through the Y shaped daytime running lamps. The bonnet features two prominent lines, while the bumper has been redesigned with larger air intakes and a honeycomb pattern. The bumper also integrates driver assistance sensors as ADAS safety features will be available on select variants.

From the side, the new-gen Hyundai i20 adopts a cleaner design approach. The alloy wheels now measure 17 inches, which is larger than the current India spec model. Black cladding runs along the wheel arches and lower section of the doors. The ORVMs are slimmer, and the rear quarter glass has been replaced by a black trim element, giving the profile a distinct look.

At the rear, the connected lighting setup continues with C shaped LED tail lamps joined by a slim light bar. The tailgate gets a raised section in the centre, while the bumper is finished in black with reflectors and a silver insert. The model also features a shark fin antenna, rear wiper, washer and defogger. The Brazil spec model measures 4,130 mm in length, 1,780 mm in width, 1,495 mm in height and has a wheelbase of 2,580 mm. However, the India spec new-gen Hyundai i20 is expected to remain under 4 metres in length to benefit from lower taxation norms.

New-Gen Hyundai i20 – Interior Design and Features

The interior of the new-gen Hyundai i20 focuses on technology and comfort. It features a curved display panel that integrates a 10.25 inch digital instrument cluster with a larger 12.3 inch infotainment screen. Below this sits a vertical climate control panel with touch based controls and a rotary knob for fan speed adjustment. The cabin uses a dual tone theme along with leather upholstery, a wireless charger and rear AC vents.

Passengers in the second row get a 60:40 split folding rear seat, adjustable headrests and three point seatbelts for all occupants. The door trims have been redesigned with vertical detailing and silver finished speaker grilles. Notably, the Brazil spec model does not feature a sunroof, although it is expected that this feature may continue in the India spec version of the new-gen Hyundai i20.

In terms of technology and convenience, the model comes equipped with OTA updates, the Bluelink connected system, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, an electronic parking brake, and a reverse camera with sensors.

New-Gen Hyundai i20 – Powertrain Options

The new-gen Hyundai i20 is offered with two versions of a 1.0 litre three cylinder petrol engine in Brazil. The naturally aspirated version produces up to 79 bhp and 100 Nm on ethanol and slightly lower output on petrol. This engine is paired with a 5 speed manual transmission. The turbocharged 1.0 litre GDI engine produces 113 bhp and 172 Nm and is paired with a 6 speed automatic transmission.

In India, the current model uses a 1.2 litre naturally aspirated petrol engine producing 82 hp and 115 Nm, paired with either a 5 speed manual or a CVT. The sportier N Line variant uses a 1.0 litre turbo petrol engine producing 118 hp and 172 Nm, paired with a 6 speed manual or a 7 speed dual clutch automatic.

New-Gen Hyundai i20 – Safety Features

Safety is a major focus in the new-gen Hyundai i20. It comes equipped with ADAS features that includes features such as Rear Cross Traffic Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, Lane Centering Assist, Driver Attention Warning and Autonomous Emergency Braking. Additional features include Safe Exit Warning and Blind Spot Assist.

The model also offers Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop and Go and Adaptive High Beam assist. All variants come with six airbags as standard along with ABS with EBD, electronic stability control, traction control, hill start assist and emergency braking signal. Inside the cabin, safety is enhanced with three point seatbelts for all passengers, adjustable headrests, ISOFIX mounts, child safety locks, automatic door locking and unlocking in case of a collision.

New-Gen Hyundai i20 – India Launch Timeline and Rivals

There is no official confirmation on the India launch timeline of the new-gen Hyundai i20. However, it is expected that when introduced, it will retain the sub 4 metre length requirement for taxation benefits. Upon launch, it will compete with rivals such as the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Tata Altroz and Toyota Glanza.

Honda Gold Wing

The Gold Wing continues to represent the brand’s legacy in luxury touring and is now available in a new colour option for 2026. Built for long distance comfort, the motorcycle is powered by an 1833cc liquid cooled horizontally opposed six cylinder engine. It is paired with a 7 speed Dual Clutch Transmission that also features reverse and walking speed modes for improved low speed manoeuvrability.

The overall dimensions are likely to remain similar, and the signature silhouette that made the Sierra stand out is expected to be retained. The upright stance, large glasshouse, and clean proportions will continue to define its presence.

That said, a few EV specific updates are expected. The front grille is likely to be closed off in line with Tata’s electric design language. The bumpers could see minor revisions to improve aerodynamics, and the alloy wheels are expected to be redesigned for better efficiency. These changes will help distinguish the EV visually while maintaining the identity of the Sierra.

Inside the cabin, the Sierra EV is expected to carry forward the layout from the ICE version. McLaren price revision in India

According to the available details, McLaren is recalibrating prices across its core models to reflect the anticipated reduction in import duties. The scale of the cut is notably higher than what has been seen from other luxury manufacturers so far. This suggests a proactive strategy that prioritises market expansion and improved accessibility for high net worth buyers in India.

The revisions also indicate confidence in the upcoming policy framework. By adjusting prices in advance, the brand appears to be positioning itself to benefit immediately once the agreement is implemented and demand begins to respond to the lower cost of entry.

McLaren models and new prices

The revised pricing structure highlights substantial reductions across the lineup. The 750S Coupe is expected to be priced at ₹4.94 crore, down from approximately ₹7.94 crore. The 750S Spider is likely to see its price fall to ₹5.46 crore from ₹8.78 crore. Meanwhile, the GTS is set to be positioned at ₹3.83 crore, compared to its earlier price of ₹6.15 crore.

These changes represent cuts ranging from ₹2.32 crore to ₹3.32 crore depending on the model. McLaren is therefore introducing one of the most aggressive pricing corrections seen in the segment, especially when compared to recent revisions by other manufacturers.

McLaren and free trade agreement impact

The expected reduction in prices is linked to the India UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement. Under this framework, customs duties on UK built petrol cars above 3,000cc and diesel cars above 2,500cc are set to fall from 110 percent to 30 percent in the first year. This rate will gradually decline to 10 percent by the fifth year, subject to an annual import quota.

Both the 750S siblings and GTS are powered by a 4.0 litre twin turbocharged V8 engine, placing them within the highest duty bracket that stands to benefit from this policy change. McLaren is therefore directly aligned with the segment that gains the most from the proposed duty cuts.

The GTS is powered by a 4.0 litre twin turbocharged V8 that produces 626 horsepower and 630 Nm, enabling a 0 to 60 mph sprint in 3.1 seconds and a top speed of 203 mph. The 750S twins use a 4.0 litre twin turbocharged V8 that delivers 740 bhp and 800 Nm, paired with a 7 speed dual clutch transmission, allowing 0 to 100 km per hour in just 2.8 seconds.

However, the agreement is yet to be implemented. Although it was signed on 24 July 2025, the rollout has been delayed due to ongoing discussions between Indian and UK authorities on specific provisions such as steel safeguards. The revised pricing strategy indicates that manufacturers are already factoring in the future benefits, even though the official ratification process is still pending.

McLaren India presence and outlook

McLaren entered the Indian market in 2021 and established its first showroom in Mumbai in late 2022 through its importer Infinity Cars. By early 2025, the company had delivered around 50 vehicles in the country. The brand remains a niche player, but the latest pricing shift could significantly improve its appeal among buyers considering high performance imports.

Other British luxury brands such as Bentley, Rolls Royce and Aston Martin are also eligible for similar duty benefits under the agreement. However, none of them has announced price reductions so far. This gives McLaren an early mover advantage in aligning its pricing with expected policy changes.

The broader impact of the agreement is expected to reshape the luxury car market in India, especially in the high displacement segment. With lower duties and a defined import quota, brands will need to balance volume with exclusivity while adapting to a more competitive pricing environment.

Suspension options include standard steel springs, with adaptive air suspension available as an option. For performance focused buyers, Audi will also offer the SQ7 variant in select markets. This model is powered by a 4.0 litre twin turbo V8 engine producing 591 horsepower and 800 Nm of torque, allowing it to accelerate from 0 to 100 kmph in just 3.7 seconds.

3rd Gen Audi Q7 – India Launch Timeline and Expected Price

Bookings for the third generation model will begin in Germany this month, with deliveries scheduled to start in September 2026. Pricing will start at 87,900 euros for the base diesel variant, going up to 90,500 euros for the higher specification version. Pricing for the petrol variants has not yet been announced.
