Mercedes-Benz G 450d Launched with Most Powerful Diesel Engine Yet: Check Details

Mercedes-Benz has launched the Mercedes-Benz G 450d in India, expanding its G-Class lineup with a diesel engine for 2025. Priced from ₹2.90 crore (ex-showroom), the new model completes the brand’s powertrain triad—diesel, petrol, and electric—under the G-Class umbrella. Only 50 units will be available initially, emphasizing exclusivity in a segment where individuality often defines luxury.

The launch marks a significant step for Mercedes-Benz India as it aims to cater to the enduring demand for diesel powertrains, even as the industry moves towards petrol-hybrids and electrification. Mercedes-Benz’s most recent launch before the G 450d was the Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 4MATIC+ Coupe.

Mercedes-Benz G 450d – Exterior Design

The Mercedes-Benz G 450d retains the unmistakable G-Class silhouette that has endured since 1979. While the boxy design remains, Mercedes has refined several elements to modernize the SUV without losing its utilitarian roots.

The G 450d gets a new front bumper with four vertical louvers integrated into the air inlets, a redesigned radiator grille with four horizontal slats, and an updated A-pillar cladding. These subtle changes improve both aerodynamics and cabin acoustics. The SUV also features a roof-edge spoiler lip that further enhances wind flow and stability.

Complementing the rugged body is a set of 20-inch AMG alloy wheels finished in high-gloss black with a high-sheen effect. The design continues to balance old-school charm with contemporary flair, ensuring that the G-Class remains instantly recognizable on the road.

Mercedes-Benz G 450d – Interior Design and Features

Inside, the Mercedes-Benz G 450d offers an elegant yet functional layout. The cabin showcases two-tone Nappa leather upholstery under the AMG Line interior theme, accompanied by metallic trim inserts and customizable ambient lighting, including illuminated air vents.

A key highlight is the Burmester 3D Surround Sound system with Dolby Atmos support, delivering 760W through 18 speakers. The dashboard hosts the new MBUX NTG7 infotainment system featuring dual 12.3-inch displays, smartphone integration via wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and a new off-road cockpit.

This off-road interface displays vehicle data such as altitude, compass, tire pressure, and differential lock status. The “Transparent Hood” function, accessible through the off-road menu, uses cameras to project the terrain directly below the vehicle onto the central screen, aiding in navigating tricky obstacles.

Mercedes’ MANUFAKTUR program also extends deep personalization options with bespoke paint choices, unique stitching, and upholstery finishes—allowing every Mercedes-Benz G 450d to be distinct.

Mercedes-Benz G 450d – Powertrain and Performance

The Mercedes-Benz G 450d is powered by a 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder diesel engine paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system. This setup delivers 362 hp and 750 Nm of torque, with an additional 20 hp boost from the integrated starter generator (ISG) at lower speeds.

Performance figures are impressive for a 2.5-tonne SUV—it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.8 seconds and reaches a top speed of 210 km/h. The engine is mated to an all-wheel-drive system and a nine-speed automatic transmission.

The Mercedes-Benz G 450d continues to rely on the proven ladder-frame construction, ensuring off-road strength. It comes equipped with three mechanical differential locks, adaptive damping, and an independent double-wishbone front suspension combined with a rigid rear axle.

Off-road credentials include a ground clearance of 241 mm, approach and departure angles of 31 degrees and 30 degrees respectively, a fording depth of 70 cm, and stability on side slopes of up to 35 degrees.

Mercedes-Benz G 450d – Market Positioning and Rivals

With this launch, Mercedes-Benz positions the G 450d as a versatile bridge between the high-performance AMG G 63 and the all-electric G 580 EQ Technology. It targets customers who prefer diesel’s torque-rich driving experience while maintaining the G-Class’s legendary capability.

In India, the Mercedes-Benz G 450d rivals luxury off-roaders such as the Land Rover Defender 110 Diesel and Toyota Land Cruiser 300 series. The company also introduced “G-Tribe Escapades,” an exclusive drive experience for select customers. The program will feature curated drives through Bhutan, from Thimphu to Paro, showcasing the G-Class’s performance across demanding terrains.
