2026 Mercedes-Benz S-Class facelift Unveiled: Here’s What’s Changed

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled a comprehensively updated version of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class for global markets, marking one of the most significant revisions within the current generation of the flagship luxury sedan. The update spans exterior design changes, interior technology upgrades, revised powertrain options and expanded driver assistance capabilities.

According to the manufacturer, more than half of the vehicle has been newly developed or refined as part of this update. The Mercedes-Benz S-Class continues to be offered in standard and long wheelbase forms, with petrol, diesel and plug in hybrid powertrains available across global markets. While the model has already been revealed internationally and is set to reach showrooms in several regions in the coming months, the India launch is expected to take place in late 2026.

Mercedes-Benz S-Class Exterior Design

The exterior of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class has been updated with a stronger visual emphasis on lighting and front end presence. The most noticeable change is the revised radiator grille, which is now larger and incorporates illuminated elements for the first time on the S-Class. An illuminated Mercedes star on the bonnet is also available.

Headlamp design has been revised with new digital light units featuring a twin star DRL signature. Mercedes states that the updated lighting hardware increases illumination range and resolution, improving night time visibility while reducing glare for other road users. At the rear, the taillights feature a revised internal design with three star shaped elements.

New wheel designs and additional exterior colour options have been introduced, including matte and high gloss finishes. There are AMG Line styling packages also on offer, that alter bumper designs and wheel choices without mechanical changes.

Mercedes-Benz S-Class Interior Design and Features

Inside, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class introduces a revised digital and cabin layout that reflects the brand’s current focus on software led functionality and rear seat comfort. The updated model features the latest MBUX Superscreen layout, which integrates the central 14.1-inch infotainment display and a 12.3-inch front passenger screen beneath a single glass surface. A fully digital 12.3-inch instrument cluster remains standard, with optional three dimensional display functionality depending on market and variant. The rear passenger seats are equipped with individual 13.1-inch screens paired with an individual tablet for control. Audio is handled by a 3-D Burmester surround speaker system or an optional 4-D Burmester surround sound system with integrated Dolby-Atmos.

The latest Mercedes Benz operating system forms the backbone of the infotainment and vehicle control architecture. The system supports voice based interaction, configurable menus and over the air software updates for selected functions. Rear seat focused features continue to be a priority for the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, particularly in long wheelbase versions, with options such as individual rear seats, extended legroom, fold out tables and rear seat entertainment screens. There is also an option for integrated interior cameras that enable video conferencing functionality for rear passengers.

Material quality, ambient lighting themes and upholstery options have been expanded through standard and Manufaktur specifications. Advanced climate control systems with multi zone functionality and enhanced air filtration are also part of the package. However, it remains to be seen how many of the interior features and digital functions showcased on the global specification will be offered on the India bound version of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

Mercedes-Benz S-Class – Powertrain Options

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class is offered with a broad range of electrified powertrains. Petrol and diesel engines are paired with mild hybrid technology using an integrated starter generator, operating on a 48 volt electrical system. This setup supports smoother start stop operation, coasting functions and torque assistance during acceleration.

Six cylinder petrol engines are offered in multiple output levels, while a new flat-crank V8 petrol engine makes it debut, the engine produces 537hp and 750Nm of torque. Six cylinder diesel variants continue to be part of the lineup, they are available in two guises 350d and powerful 450d. Mercedes has also updated its plug in hybrid options, which now offer an electric only driving range of approximately 100 kilometres under test conditions.

All powertrains are paired with automatic transmissions and feature standard rear wheel drive or all wheel drive depending on variant

Mercedes-Benz S-Class – Suspension and Safety Systems

Suspension and Safety remains central to the Mercedes-Benz S-Class family. The model continues to offer air suspension as standard, with an optional active suspension system that can adjust damping based on road surface data and driving conditions. Rear axle steering is also offered, improving low speed manoeuvrability and stability at higher speeds

On the safety and driver assistance front, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class is equipped with an extensive suite of advanced driver assistance systems. These include adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assistance, automated braking and assisted parking functions, supported by a network of cameras, radar and ultrasonic sensors. In markets where regulations permit, the system is capable of operating at what Mercedes describes as Level 2++ autonomy, allowing for highly automated driving in specific traffic and highway scenarios.

It is important to note that these advanced autonomous driving functions are available only in countries where local regulations allow such systems to be activated. Market specific restrictions may limit or deactivate certain features, and availability on the India specification of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class will depend on regulatory approvals and final homologation.

Mercedes-Benz S-Class – Market Positioning and Rivals

In India, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class continues to operate at the top end of the luxury sedan segment and competes most directly with the BMW 7 Series. Both models are positioned as chauffeur oriented flagships, placing emphasis on rear seat comfort, ride quality and onboard technology rather than outright performance. Globally, the competitive landscape differs slightly, with the Mercedes-Benz S-Class positioned primarily against both the BMW 7 Series and Audi A8 in international markets where both models continue to be offered.

While the updated Mercedes-Benz S-Class has been unveiled for global markets and is expected to go on sale internationally in the coming weeks, its India launch is expected to follow at a later stage. As per reports, the updated model is likely to be introduced in India only by late 2026 or early 2027, subject to homologation timelines and Mercedes-Benz India’s product planning.
