JSW Greentech Ampstar Deploys First 100 Electric Trucks for JSW Cement

JSW Greentech Limited has announced the commercial deployment of its first 100 Ampstar electric tractor trucks for heavy duty transportation. The trucks will be used by JSW Cement to transport industrial materials between Nandyal in Andhra Pradesh and Vijayanagar in Karnataka.

The announcement marks the first commercial order for Ampstar, JSW Group’s electric commercial vehicle brand, which was unveiled a little over a month ago. The AMPSTAR 4×2 and 6×4 electric tractor trucks have also received certification under the Central Motor Vehicle Rules (CMVR) from the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), confirming that they meet the required safety, performance and regulatory standards for Indian roads.

Ampstar Electric Truck Specifications

The Ampstar 4×2 55T electric tractor truck is designed for heavy duty industrial transportation in Indian operating conditions. It produces a peak power output of 430 kW and peak torque of 2,600 Nm.

The first 100 trucks will transport clinker and slag along an approximately 330 km route between Nandyal and Vijayanagar. The fleet is expected to move around 1.25 lakh tonnes of cargo every month, supporting JSW Cement’s industrial transportation requirements.

JSW Eco Mobility will provide the battery services for the fleet, while Paradeep Parivahan Limited will serve as the logistics partner. The project will also include a dedicated electric freight corridor with four battery swapping stations between Nandyal and Vijayanagar. This infrastructure is expected to support vehicle operations by allowing batteries to be swapped instead of waiting for conventional charging.

Electric Trucks Expected to Reduce Diesel Consumption

According to JSW Greentech, the deployment is expected to save approximately 4.5 crore litres of diesel over the contract period. It is also projected to avoid around 6,250 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.

The deployment forms part of JSW Cement’s efforts to reduce emissions from its transportation operations. The combination of electric trucks and battery swapping infrastructure is intended to support the movement of industrial materials while maintaining operational efficiency.

Sumit Mittal, CEO of JSW Greentech Limited, said the deployment was an important step towards making electric heavy duty transportation commercially viable. The company plans to build an integrated electric mobility system that combines vehicles, battery services and supporting infrastructure.

Narinder Kahlon, Director Finance at JSW Cement, said the company aims to reduce its dependence on diesel and lower emissions from its logistics operations through the deployment.

Ampstar Manufacturing Facility and Future Plans

Ampstar electric trucks will be manufactured at JSW Greentech’s upcoming facility at AURIC in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra. Spread across approximately 90 acres, the facility is planned to have an annual production capacity of 15,000 electric buses and trucks.

The facility will include an automated truck cabin production line and an integrated battery ecosystem. JSW Greentech will also use its research and development centre in Pune to support its vehicle development work.

The company currently offers electric commercial vehicle power configurations ranging from 150 kW to 500 kW. Its business models include outright vehicle purchases, leasing and Battery as a Service, along with charging infrastructure, financing and after sales support.

Following the introduction of its electric tractor trucks, Ampstar plans to expand its range to include tippers and fixed body dumpers.

With its first 100 electric trucks now moving towards commercial operations, Ampstar is taking its initial steps into India’s heavy duty electric transportation sector. The success of the deployment will depend on how effectively the trucks and battery swapping network support the demands of industrial freight movement.
