MG Motor’s Windsor EV comes with innovative battery-as-a-service model

JSW-MG Motor India has unveiled their latest product, called the Windsor EV. Priced from Rs. 9.99 Lakhs (Ex-showroom), it employs a unique BaaS (Battery as a service) model wherein the user will have to pay Rs. 3.5 per km as the subscription charge for the battery.
MG Windsor EV: Design
Designed as a ‘CUV’, the Windsor EV features a unique design that combines elements of a hatchback and an MPV. At the front, you have an illuminated MG logo in the centre with low mounted headlamp clusters. There is also a connected LED light strip above it. Moving on towards the side, it is here that one sees the focus MG Motor has put on the space for the cabin with a cab-forward design and a tall height. You also get 18 inch alloys which do well to break up the mass above. At the rear, you have connected LED taillamps as well a small skid plate and vertical reflectors on the bumper.
Inside, it uses an all-black theme with gold accents. The centre point of the dashboard is the 15.6 inch infotainment screen with wireless Android Auto and Apple Carplay connectivity. For the Indian market, MG has provided physical controls for the climate settings just below. Other notable features include the ‘Aero Lounge’ rear seats which recline upto 135 degrees along with the unique cupholders on either ends of the dashboard and a 12.3 inch digital cluster for the driver.
MG Windsor EV: Features & Drivetrain
With the Windsor EV, MG is clearly targetting the chauffered market buyers. In terms of equipment, it gets a panoramic sunroof, LED headlamps, wireless charging, ventilated seats, 9 speaker Infinity music system and Ambient lighting among more. According to MG, the Windsor EV has a best-in-segment wheelbase of 2700mm along with a flat floor for the rear passengers.
Talking of safety, it gets 6 airbags, ABS, EBD, all wheel disc brakes, ESC and 360 degree as a part of it’s list.
Underneath the floor, the Windsor EV gets powered by a front-axle mounted motor making 136HP and 200NM. It derives power from a 38kWh battery giving it a claimed range of 331Km. It gets four driving modes- Eco+, Eco, Normal and Sport. It also says that it is capable of 45kW DC fast charging which can juice up the battery till 80% within 55 minutes.
As part of the purchase, MG is also offering a lifetime battery warranty for the first owners along with a year of free public fast charging.
MG Windsor EV: Variants & Pricing
MG Motor will be offering the Windsor EV in three variants- Excite, Exclusive and Essence. The base Excite variant can be had for Rs. 9.99 Lakh(Ex-showroom) excluding the battery while prices for higher variants will be announced later.
MG Motor is trying a unique BaaS (Battery As A Service) model for the Windsor EV wherein the buyer will have to get the battery on a subscription rental basis from MG by paying Rs. 3.5 per KM. MG has also said that it has tied up with multiple financial vendors to offer flexible plans. MG Motor also claims that this arrangement will offer new customers better affordability while buying an EV for the first time.
The Windsor EV has no direct rivals, but it should go up against the Tata Nexon EV and Mahindra XUV4OO among other rivals.
