New Generation Lexus ES Set for India Launch on March 20th: Details

Lexus India is preparing to introduce the 8th generation of the Lexus ES in the Indian market on March 20th this year. The ES has been a key offering for the brand in the luxury sedan segment and the upcoming model will bring a new design language, updated interior features and revised powertrain options. The latest generation of the ES was revealed for global markets toward the end of last year. Lexus is now set to bring the sedan to India. Once launched, it will compete in the mid sized luxury sedan category against models such as the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, BMW 3 Series and Audi A4.

Lexus ES – Expected Exterior Design

The new Lexus ES adopts a sharper and more modern design compared to its predecessor. At the front, the sedan features Z shaped headlamps and daytime running lights. The main headlight units are positioned slightly lower and are partially concealed behind vertically oriented gloss black trim elements.

Unlike previous Lexus models, the large spindle style grille has been removed. In its place, the new ES features a smaller intake section that gives the front fascia a cleaner appearance. The updated design represents a shift in Lexus styling direction.

At the rear, the sedan features a connected tail lamp design. Instead of the traditional Lexus badge, the brand name is spelled out across the rear light bar. The car also features a gently sloping roofline that adds to the overall silhouette. Below the tail lamps, L shaped reflectors are integrated into the rear bumper design.

These exterior details are based on the specifications of the global model. The final design elements and equipment for the India specification vehicle will only be confirmed when the car is officially launched.

Lexus ES – Expected Interior Design

Inside the cabin, the new Lexus ES adopts a minimalist layout that continues the approach seen in the previous generation. The steering wheel has been completely redesigned and no longer features the traditional Lexus badge. Instead, the word Lexus is spelled out across the center of the steering wheel.

The sedan is equipped with a 14 inch infotainment touchscreen placed prominently on the dashboard. It is also expected to feature a 12.3 inch digital instrument display for the driver. The new ES is expected to offer premium audio through a Mark Levinson sound system.

The rear seats are expected to offer electrically adjustable reclining functions for improved passenger comfort. Lexus has also equipped the vehicle with an electrochromic panoramic glass roof that can adjust its transparency electronically. The sedan also features a Boss mode function.

Lexus claims that NVH levels have also been reduced in the new generation ES. However, these interior features are based on the global specification model. The exact equipment and feature list for the India market will be confirmed only after the official launch.

Lexus ES – Expected Powertrain Options

Globally, the new Lexus ES is available with both hybrid and electric powertrain options. The current ES sold in India is offered only with a hybrid powertrain and it remains to be seen which versions will be introduced for the Indian market.

Internationally, the ES hybrid is offered with two powertrain options. The first is a 2 litre petrol hybrid that produces 197 horsepower. The second is a 2.5 litre petrol hybrid that produces 201 horsepower. The ES 350h uses the same 2.5 litre setup but in a higher state of tune that produces 247 horsepower. All hybrid versions are paired with an eCVT transmission.

The electric variant of the ES is offered in two versions globally. The ES 350e uses a single motor front wheel drive configuration and delivers a claimed range of 685 kilometres on a single charge. The ES 550e uses a dual motor all wheel drive setup and offers a claimed range of 610 kilometres. The 350e produces 224 horsepower while the 550e produces 343 horsepower.

These specifications are based on the global model lineup. Lexus India has not yet confirmed which powertrain options will be offered in the country.

Lexus ES – Expected Safety Features and Rivals

In terms of safety, the new Lexus ES is equipped with advanced driver assistance systems along with several passive safety features. These include multiple airbags, ISOFIX child seat mounts and other standard safety equipment.

When launched in India, the new generation Lexus ES will compete with the BMW 3 Series Gran Limousine along with the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and the Audi A4 in the mid sized luxury sedan segment. While the global model offers a wide range of features and powertrain options, the final specifications for the India bound ES will only be confirmed at the time of launch on March 20.
