The new GLS becomes the first launch of Mercedes in India for 2024

Mercedes Benz has launched the facelifted version of it’s full size SUV, the GLS. The facelift which is relatively minor packs in cosmetic tweaks, feature additions and a power bump. The GLS facelift has been priced from Rs. 1.32 Crore (Ex-showroom). It becomes the first of many launched planned by Mercedes this year.
Mercedes Benz GLS facelift; Exterior
On the exterior, the GLS facelift features a larger four slat grille than its predecessor. There is also restyled front and rear bumpers along with slightly revised DRLs. At the rear, one can now notice reprofiled taillamps which feature a block pattern for the lights. Mercedes will give 21 inch alloys as standard on the GLS facelift and it is available in a choice of five colour options- Obsidian Black, High-tech Silver, Sodalite Blue, Selenite Grey and Polar White.
Mercedes Benz GLS facelift; Interior
The biggest changes on the GLS facelift can be seen inside. For starters, it now features Maybach-inspired black wood trim on the dashboard. There is also a new steering wheel with capacitive touch controls and a digital cockpit instrument cluster. The infotainment system gets upgraded to feature Mercedes Benz’ latest MBUX software with transparent bonnet feature and a 360 degree camera. It also gets ADAS features. Music duties are handled by a 590W Burmester surround sound system with 13 speakers.
Other comfort features added include heated and ventilated seats and wireless charging. Mercedes will be offering the “Rear Comfort Package” as standard which brings four massaging seats, electric sunblinds, twin 11.6 inch entertainment screens for the rear passengers and a tablet to control car functions and more. The interiors are available in three colour options- Beige, Brown or Black.
Mercedes Benz GLS facelift; Powertrain
Under the hood, the GLS gets two engine options- a 3.0L 6 cylinder turbo-petrol making 381HP and 500NM. The diesel is also a 3.0L 6 cylinder unit, however, it makes 367HP and 700NM of torque. The new addition is the upgraded ISG system available on both powertrains which adds a further boost of 20HP and 200NM when required. Paired to the engines is a 9 speed torque converter automatic transmission which sends power to all four wheels via a 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system. The GLS facelift rides on adjustable air suspension.
Mercedes Benz GLS facelift; Price, rivals
Mercedes has launched GLS facelift in one variant each with the petrol and diesel. These are called the 450 and 450d and are priced at Rs. 1.32 Crore and 1.37 Crore (Ex-showroom) respectively. It will rival cars such as the BMW X7, Volvo XC90 and Range Rover Velar among others.
