Volkswagen has officially revealed the Volkswagen Tayron R-Line in India. Positioned above the Tiguan internationally, the Tayron will become Volkswagen’s new flagship SUV for India once it goes on sale. Volkswagen has not yet clarified whether the Tayron will be locally assembled or sold as a fully imported unit, and the R-Line specification indicates that India will receive the sportier, more feature-rich variant.
The Volkswagen Tayron R-Line is based on the MQB Evo platform and it replaces the Tiguan Allspace globally. For the Indian market, it will serve as Volkswagen’s flagship for the Indian market, targeting buyers looking for a premium seven-seat SUV with a European design and driving focus.
Volkswagen Tayron R-Line – Exterior Design
The Volkswagen Tayron R-Line follows Volkswagen’s latest global design language, borrowing several cues from newer international models while retaining the brand’s understated styling approach. Up front, the SUV features a wide grille with slim LED headlamps that are visually connected by a light bar. The R-Line variant adds sportier bumper designs, larger air intakes and gloss black accents that set it apart from standard trims.

In profile, the Tayron appears larger and more imposing than the current Tiguan sold in India. It gets strong shoulder lines, flared wheel arches and large alloy wheels exclusive to the R-Line specification. The roofline remains relatively flat, emphasising interior space rather than coupe-like styling. At the rear, the Volkswagen Tayron R-Line features a full-width LED light bar, a redesigned tailgate and dual-tone bumper treatment, once again leaning towards a restrained but modern look rather than aggressive styling.
Volkswagen Tayron R-Line – Interior Design
Inside, the Volkswagen Tayron R-Line adopts a minimalist layout that is now typical of Volkswagen’s latest interiors. The dashboard is dominated by a large free-standing touchscreen infotainment system, expected to be a 15-inch unit, something very similar to what we have seen on the Tiguan R-Line. This is paired with a fully digital 10.25-inch instrument cluster.

Physical buttons are kept to a minimum, with most vehicle functions integrated into the touchscreen interface. A rotary controller with a small integrated display is positioned on the centre console, allowing control over drive modes, audio and ambient lighting. The R-Line trim adds sport seats, contrast stitching, aluminium pedals and darker interior accents. Features expected for India include multi-zone climate control, panoramic sunroof, wireless smartphone connectivity, powered front seats and a comprehensive ADAS suite.
Volkswagen Tayron R-Line – Expected Powertrain
The Volkswagen Tayron R-Line for India is expected to be powered by a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine producing around 204hp. This engine is paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox and Volkswagen’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive system. For India, this powertrain is expected to be offered unchanged, given the vehicle’s positioning and pricing.

Internationally, the Tayron is also available with multiple petrol and diesel options, but Volkswagen is likely to limit the Indian lineup to a single petrol engine to simplify homologation and maintain brand positioning. There has been no confirmation of electrified or hybrid powertrains for India at this stage. Performance figures are yet to be disclosed for the Indian-spec Volkswagen Tayron R-Line.
Volkswagen Tayron R-Line – Expected Price
As a completely built unit, the Volkswagen Tayron R-Line is expected to be priced higher than the Tiguan currently on sale. Industry estimates suggest an ex-showroom price in the range of ₹47 lakh to ₹50 lakh. This would place it at the top of Volkswagen’s India lineup and position the Tayron as a niche premium offering rather than a mass-market SUV.

Volkswagen has not officially announced pricing or launch timelines, but the Tayron is expected to arrive in India sometime later this month. The company has already revealed official images of the SUV on the Volkswagen India website and has also begun teasing the model across its Indian social media channels.
Volkswagen Tayron R-Line – Market Positioning and Rivals
In India, the Volkswagen Tayron R-Line will operate in a space that overlaps with premium monocoque SUVs rather than ladder-frame models. Likely rivals include the Skoda Kodiaq and the Jeep Meridian. While some buyers may also cross-shop entry-level luxury SUVs this means it will also go up against the likes of the BMW X1, Audi Q3 and Mercedes-Benz GLA in terms of expected pricing.
